Tree Scavenger Hunt
Fall 2019
by Gioia Caiola Forman
The Friends of Green Spring (FROGS) invites you to a family- friendly tree scavenger hunt beginning on Gardener’s Holiday, Sunday December 8 and running until FIRST HIKE, Wednesday January 1, 2020.
There will be ten themed trees in the gardens. Nine of the ten trees will be decorated with nature items, and one will feature children’s books. You pick up an information card at the front desk listing the type of tree and its theme. You then walk the beautiful gardens, find the trees and, enjoy the fabulous winter interest.
The hunt can be a repeated experience—the first visit finding the specific tree and theme and perhaps a second or third identifying the tree names from their recognized characteristics. It’s a fun way to teach all family members about trees. The themes will include bugs and bats, butterflies, reptiles, flowers and bees, birds, weather, and more. Decorated Green Spring trees will include the Katsura, a four season tree that at certain times smells like cotton candy, and a Swamp White Oak, which is in the beech tree family. Visit to find out about the other eight.
Come and enjoy this fun activity and delight in beautiful and unique Green Spring Gardens.
Green Spring Gardens is administered by the Fairfax County Park Authority’s Resource Management Division. If accommodations or alternative formats are needed, please call 703-324-8563 at least 10 working-days before the event.
