FROGS (Friends of Green Spring) is dedicated solely to the support of Green Spring Gardens, a unique Fairfax County (Virginia) Park Authority site. A gem of a public garden and historic site, the garden's 31 acres offer a multitude of settings, features, and programs to inspire and educate gardeners, provide a place for quiet contemplation for all, and open a window into the county's cultural past. Grounds include 22 themed gardens featuring feature year-round displays of plants suited to the Mid-Atlantic Region including a garden based on a design by landscape designer Beatrix Farrand. The Historic House, built in 1784 and listed in the National Register of Historic Places and the Virginia Landmarks register offers tea programs and tours. The Horticulture Center houses a gift shop, classrooms, glasshouse, plant shop and an extensive horticultural reference library. The center is also a creative hub for Green Spring staff who cultivate an extensive array of year-round programs to inspire garden lovers and garden makers of all ages and talents from the newly curious to the seasoned professional.
Initiatives supported by FROGS
Since its formation in 1993 and thanks to membership dues and other generous contributions from its members, FROGS has supported Green Spring Gardens with thousands of hours of volunteer labor and significant financial resources. We purchase garden plants and equipment, underwrite educational programs for children and adults, and fund interns and special projects. We closed out 2018 topping cumulative contributions of $2 million in support of the gardens:
In addition to general support of over 10% of Green Spring's annual operational expenses FROGS has funded numerous specific projects, including the following:
