Manager's Message
Fall 2019
by Nicole Conners, Green Spring Gardens Manager
Nicole Conners (Photo credit: Fred Blott) The Rolling Stones’ song, “Time Waits For No One,” rings with so much truth and resonates with age. Seasons seem to pass faster and faster every year, even when I constantly remind myself to slow down. One great thing about Green Spring is that it provides a place for solitude and a chance to slow down. As I write this, Fall Garden Day was just a few weeks ago, and we are now gearing up for winter and planning spring programs. I would like to personally thank the many volunteers and staff who contribute to events. We have an extraordinary team. Countless hours of service go into all events in the gardens. Our annual events are forever being prepared; one finishes, and we are busy onto the next one. We love planning and executing the FROGS-sponsored events and treasure these “fund and friend” raisers.
This fall we look forward to starting and completing two major projects at the gardens. We will begin upgrading our current irrigation system to be “smart” and provide relief for staff and the high demands of watering the gardens by hand. During the month of October, phase 1 was implemented and included the areas around the Horticulture Center. Funding for initial phases of smart irrigation was made possible by a grant through Fairfax County’s Environmental Improvement Program. Also this fall, the roof will be replaced at the Horticulture Center. The roof replacement is being managed by the Park Authority’s Planning and Development Division using 2016 Park Bond funding and should be complete by December 1.
During the holidays, remember that Green Spring hosts a terrific lineup of program offerings throughout the year. A Park Authority gift card is a perfect present for the hard-to-shop-for loved one! Gift cards can be redeemed at Green Spring for trips and classes, at RECenters, and at golf courses for tons of fun. Please remember to register early for trips and classes, and do not hesitate to contact our front desk at 703-642-5173 with questions and/or registration assistance. Lastly, please share your ideas for trips and classes at the gardens—we want to know what ignites YOUR interests!
Please come and stroll leisurely through the gardens because it is true—time waits for no one.
