Beatrix Farrand landscape

Green Spring Gardens' rich history is graced with a landscape designed by renowned landscape designer Beatrix Jones Farrand (1872-1959).  Farrand designed the landscape around the Historic House while working across the Potomac on her iconic Dumbarton Oaks project in Georgetown.

At Green Spring, Farrand, a master of grand scale work, distilled her design philosophy into a small space. Though modest in scope and scale, the garden is a pure expression of Farrand's style and technique. It was one of the last projects of her celebrated career and is her only garden design in Virginia.  The landscape includes signature Farrand design elements such as axial views, a progression from formal to natural with distance from the house, and thoughtful incorporation of existing topography and site conditions.

  • In 2014, a Garden Club of Virginia project restored key elements of Farrand’s garden room at Green Spring. The project was officially presented to the Park Authority on June 10, 2015.
  • The story of Green Spring Gardens' historic Beatrix Farrand landscape has earned a permanent home in the Historic American Landscapes Survey (HALS) at the Library of Congress and is available online.  HALS documents and protects significant historic landscapes throughout the United States and its territories and ensures access to the information by historic preservation practitioners of the future.  The report chronicles Farrand's work at Green Spring, private memories attached to it, and recent restoration that keeps its legacy alive. The report was prepared under the leadership of Green Spring Historian Debbie Waugh and was accepted by the Library of Congress in 2016.
  • In 2019, Green Spring's Farrand landscape was prominently featured in a presentation to the annual conference of the American Public Gardens Association. 'Genius from Gender Diversity in Design' traced the history of women in landscape design and highlighted Farrand's Green Spring Gardens and Dumbarton Oaks, and Ellen Biddle Shipman'sTregaron Conservancy as three extant landscapes illustrative of the genius of female design pioneers.  To discover more about women in landscape design, consult these additional updated resources, including books, articles and websites.
