Cultivating Curiosity: Inspiring Young Minds at Green Spring Gardens
Green Spring Gardens Youth and Family Education Team

Spring at Green Spring Gardens was a season of discovery, where vibrant blooms and buzzing pollinators set the stage for exciting outdoor learning. For the first time in many years, our Youth and Family Education team was fully staffed, and the creative, collaborative energy was electric! With the help of many dedicated volunteers, we joyfully guided thoughtfully designed, hands-on programming that encouraged curiosity and inspired a commitment to protecting the planet.

Whether dissecting flowers in the Botany Lab, digging for bugs in the Dig It Garden, or observing the effects of pollution through our 3D watershed model, children experienced the wonders of nature firsthand and gained a deeper appreciation for their environment.

The most inspiring moments came when young learners translated their discoveries into action. A group of fifth graders expressed a desire to organize local waterway cleanups, while some second graders encouraged their friends to leave no trace on trails. Even first graders felt compelled to remind us to make sustainable choices, like biking to work! These memorable experiences reinforce our mission: to inspire a love for nature while fostering environmental stewardship and curiosity in the next generation.

As field trip season wound down, we kept the excitement rolling into summer camps and programs! One happy camper shared Painted Lady butterflies she hatched herself, and we released them in the gardens with our wonderful Garden Sprouts Exploration summer camp kiddos. At our June Summer Story Time, Rainbow Vegetables, families enjoyed a read-aloud story, sang songs, tasted fresh vegetables, and painted with potatoes.

Coming in August, families can craft hummingbird-inspired art at Garden Artists – Hummingbirds: Tiny but Tireless (August 23), a weekend program that includes a guided walk to spot these tiny wonders and learn which flowers attract them. To sign up for this and other programs, visit Parktakes online or stop by the front desk at Green Spring Gardens.

Have an amazing and adventurous summer!
