Sunday Afternoon Appointment with History
by Debbie Waugh, Green Spring Historian
Historic House Lecture at Green Spring GardensBeginning this spring, Historic House staff invite you to join us for once-a-month Sunday afternoon history-themed lectures.
Talks will cover a wide range of thought-provoking and entertaining topics that connect us to past cultures and experiences, as well as stories of Green Spring's past. Attendees may enjoy refreshments, light bites, and conversation before and after the lectures.
Upcoming lectures
Sunday, June 14, 1:30-2:30 pm: Anyone for Strawberries? Explore the surprising origins and botany of the strawberry, the quintessential summer fruit that’s perfect for garden parties. Hear about the significance of the “garden room” designed for entertainment behind the Historic House, then walk over there to enjoy a bowl of the classic summer dessert - strawberries and fresh cream – garden party-style.
Sunday, July 26, 1:30-2:30 pm: Historical Invention. Hear about deliberate hoaxes and accidental myths that have shaped our perceptions of the past. Examine famous frauds, fakes, and forgeries, and discover why many popular fictions gained acceptance as historical fact. Learn about a few historical myths we’ve discovered – and corrected – at Historic Green Spring.
Each season, you’ll find the lecture series listed in Green Spring’s Programs and Events, on Green Spring’s website, and in the history section of the Fairfax County Park Authority’s Parktakes Magazine. Sign up online or call 703-642-5173.
We hope you’ll make a Sunday afternoon appointment with history soon!
