Hello, FROGS!

It’s nice to be out in the gardens again. We have an update on the 2023 annual appeal for an educational pavilion, some important facts about FROGS support for Green Spring Gardens over the years, and news about the county’s support for parks’ budgets—also, a reminder about Spring Garden Day.

A great big thank you to the FROGS members and others who generously supported the 2023 Annual Appeal to the tune of almost $40,000, with funds still trickling in. Green Spring Gardens staff and the Fairfax Park Authority are finalizing design ideas. This is a long-term project, and we thank you for giving it a great start.

We thank you also for your membership. Please spread the word; we’ve lost some members post-COVID. Do you know that, among other things, FROGS buys ALL the plant material for Green Spring Gardens—trees, plants, seeds, and propagation materials? We also support the salary of interns and some staff, educational programs, and activities. Over our 30+ years, we’ve given Green Spring Gardens almost $2.9 million, plus thousands of volunteer hours. Please see the chart at the end of this edition of Gardenline for details.

We’ve just been through the Fairfax County budget hearings. Thanks to great community support, funds for parks were increased last year. We hope that will continue this year. Please let your elected officials hear from you about how much parks mean to you and your community.

SPRING GARDEN DAY IS MAY 18TH. We have a wonderful lineup of 41 vendors so far, plants, garden-related gifts, and food. Please come. We have our usual convenient plant check setup, with delivery to your car. Please read Sunny Greene’s article on all the effort “Behind the Scenes” that goes into Spring Garden Day.
