Excellent Excavators
by Bailey Price, Youth and Family Education Coordinator

Youth and Family had a very busy spring! With our field trips, scout groups, and public Family Fun, and Garden Artist programs, we had just under 2,000 children attend programs at Green Spring Gardens.

2023summer-youth-fammil-funWith daily guided nature walks we have watched the gardens wake up, teaching small minds all about spring flowers and growing new shoots. We have eagerly watched the geese build their nest down on the island of the lower pond and have seen the turtles emerge from dormancy in the sun on the banks of the upper pond.

Exploring the components of the soil in our Dig-it Garden was a big favorite of our school groups. Armed with a shovel and a magnifying glass, the great excavation began! The kids got to dig for roots, rocks, clay, and critters. Every worm and grub brought so much joy! One popular larva gathered an impressive following (pictured). We dug up so much clay we were sure we would be able to offer a pottery class.

Looking forward, we have an exciting summer planned!

Although our summer camps are fully booked, the fun does not stop there. We have exciting Family Fun programs coming up that include Planting Your Plate (6/17, 10-11:30 am), Aquatic Adventures (7/1, 10-11:30 am), and Tree Trails (8/5, 10-11 am). Register through Parktakes or by calling our front desk at 703-642-5173.

We are always looking for more volunteers who would like to help with Y+F programs! Our volunteers are a big part of making quality programs a success at Green Spring Gardens.
