Many of you may know of a very large and impressive sculpture by J. Seward Johnson, Jr. titled “The Awakening.” It depicts a formerly sleeping giant struggling to come up out of the ground. This sculpture resided at Hains Point in East Potomac Park for years before being relocated to National Harbor. I’ve admired it because it is so massive (72 feet long) and because it reminds me of the title of a book I read and loved in high school, “Giants in the Earth,” by Ole Rolvaag. This year it has also reminded me of all the cicadas that rose out of the earth. Thank goodness they were not 72 feet long!
The sculpture is emblematic of the awakening we are all undergoing after the last year and a half. Do you find yourself automatically standing 6 feet away from the person with whom you are talking or reaching for a mask even though you are thoroughly vaccinated? Join the club. I believe these habits will stay with us for a while.
The members of the FROGS board are flexing our muscles and trying to get back to our normal cycle of yearly events. We hope you enjoyed our summer concert, and we are working hard to prepare for our Fall Festival scheduled for September 25.
We have really appreciated the financial and moral support that you, our members, have provided during these difficult days. Your loyalty has meant a lot to us. We have also enjoyed having Michael McDonnell serve as the acting manager of Green Spring Gardens for the past several months. His positive attitude, sense of humor, and knowledge of rock songs from my youth have been much appreciated.
Hope the rest of your summer is joyful and free from worry. We look forward to seeing you at Green Spring!
P.S. Just found out that old friend Judy Zatsick has been selected as Green Spring’s new manager. Congratulations, Judy! We are looking forward to working with you.
