Dear Friends of Green Spring,
We hope this summer issue of Gardenline finds you well! Despite the closing of park facilities due to COVID-19, Green Spring stays busy with visitors enjoying the outdoor gardens and ponds and taking advantage of curbside pick-up at the Garden Gate Plant Shop.
As Virginia begins moving gradually into Phase Three, we encourage you to continue following the latest updates on the county's Coronavirus Response.
Help Wanted — Green Spring's Art in the Garden could use your help!

50th Anniversary Celebrations Go On
Due to the Covid-19 outbreak, the October 24 gala event to commemorate Green Spring’s 50th anniversary is postponed. We will reschedule it for a time next year when we can do full justice to the occasion. In the meantime, the celebrations must go on! In fact, they are all extended into 2021. Look out for anniversary articles, videos, photo presentations, and more on our social media sites, FaceBook and Instagram, this website, and Green Spring's 50th Anniversary webpage. Our next Gardenline, the fall issue, will be a special 50th Anniversary Issue, a retrospective looking back at milestones in Green Spring’s first half century. Please visit Green Spring's 50th Anniversary for event updates. We hope you’ll join us for an expanded golden year!
The Challenge of Caring for a Public Garden During a Pandemic
Stay-at-home orders and widespread closures coincided with nature’s “busiest time of the year”—the pandemic could not stop spring from arriving at the gardens.
Faces of Green Spring
Friendly and energetic, Laura Strecker has made an impact since she arrived at Green Spring in October 2019. Ivy Sinaiko interviews Laura and discovers why Green Spring is lucky to have such a talented individual.
Learning to Like Them
Thanks to Michael Straight, Canada geese enjoy safe haven at Green Spring Gardens. Debbie Waugh tells us everything we ever wanted to know about Canada geese and how they came to the gardens.
Books and Benches … A Perfect Duo
There are thirty-four tribute benches at Green Spring Gardens and most have a story. Gioia Caiola Forman continues to tell their stories in her second article about some of the people remembered.
The Continuing Legacy of Black Walnuts at Green Spring
For many years black walnuts have graced Green Spring's landscape. Gil Medeiros tells us about the majestic black walnut tree, Juglans nigra, and its enduring history at Green Spring Gardens.
